  Import DXF DWG *SOLVED
Posted by: Bushman - 07-18-2019, 11:31 AM - Replies (2)

Good evening guys

Please would you see if you can help.....?

It has been 5 years since I did any earthworks takeoffs. Previously used 12D (Australian product) and now hoping to get back into it via Kubla.

I have an opportunity to start a 'side business doing takeoffs but first have to prove to the client I am proficient.

The estimator sent me a 'dummy project' and it has me stumped.

The files sent are in DWG/DXF and I am not getting the info I need.

Looking at the help files it seems you guys are using external CAD software to weed the file of unwanted info and then importing it into Kubla.

This is a very simple job but I am struggling with weeding out the info and getting it imported into Kubla.

Please..... please...... help.

These are the files I was given.
What 3rd party CAD software are you guys using to extract 'existing' and 'design'?

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1...sp=sharing

The CAD file has the usual 2D info and the 3D info. Viewing it in 3D you can see the info with '0' Z value as well as the info which has 'Z' values. The info with 'Z' values is shown with existing and design. But I have no idea how to seperate the two in Kubla.

Kubla gives options for 'break lines' 'contours' & 'boundaries' but not for the point vertices (existing spot levels).

I know am new to Kubla and the answer is probably right in front of me........... apologies for that....

Accuracy of Grid Method for Cut\Fill Analysis
Posted by: Ted Woods - 07-05-2019, 01:35 PM - No Replies

We have published a new blog post :

https://www.kublasoftware.com/grid-method-accuracy/

For those who are not using software to estimate earthworks volumes, the Grid Method is by far the most popular of the manual methods.  We are sometimes asked about the accuracy of this method.  It’s not easy to give a short answer to this question, because it varies greatly based on a number of factors.  In post we try to provide an answer, and give some practical guidance to those that are using this method to estimate earthworks quantities.

New Kubla Cubed blog post on error messages
Posted by: Ted Woods - 07-05-2019, 01:33 PM - No Replies

We have published a new blog post to help users with projects that aren't calculating.

Error Messages in Kubla Cubed

All software will give errors messages from time to time, and Kubla Cubed is no different.  In this post we discuss the ‘Calculation Error’ message which can sometimes occur when working on complex projects in Kubla Cubed.  We also discuss the calculation steps used by the software, and some of the new error reporting features that were introduced to the software in Version 5.7, released in July 2019.

Hi
I am new to Kubla.
Wondering why my cut volume is showing as a 13 digit number- the actual volume is 8,984m3. see attached screen shot.
When I use the measure tool the scale is correct on the drawing.
Thanks

  Break Lines Again
Posted by: KevinD - 05-05-2019, 03:51 PM - Replies (1)

Hi all,

I'm setting up the existing features of a site I'm working on (Outline. Contours, points and breaks). I note that it appears to me that the option to create break lines "at crossings" has been taken out of the program and now the only options are to add them from a file or manually. The manual option is straightforward enough, although I note that if you don't add more than 2 points the triangulation will ignore them.

My problem with the use of breaks is this:

On my large site plan I have a 4 existing large buildings which are all complete to at least their ground floor level and I know what those ground floor levels are (FFL ranges from 9.45 to 11.80), plus a lot of other 'physical' features (e.g. transformer vaults and concrete pads) from the previous contract.

I have lots of contours and elevation points to work with (in fact the site is relatively flat, having been partially leveled under an earlier contract). However, what I don't know (for any of the buildings or other features) is the actual ground level at the point where ground meets the building/feature. All the surveyor has given me is the FFL or the level on top of the feature (and some of these features are raised well above GL).

And so my questions are:

  1. when creating a line break do I use the GL at the point where the ground meets the feature or the level of the 'feature' itself (e.g. the FFL, the top of the transformer vault, top of kerb etc)?
  2. if I have to use the ground level when creating a break, but I don't know what the GL is at that point (even though I know the level of the 'feature'); because the software will not interpolate this level for me, what would you recommend I do?
  3. is there a case for saying I have to use two breaks? One to break based on the GL and the other for the 'feature'? - take for example the case of a raised roundabout, around which I placed a break based upon the GL at the base of the kerb. I also have one point level that defines the level of the ground for the roundabout itself. Do I just add that level to my model and let the software work things out or should I be adding a second break around the feature based upon this level?
Thanks

Kevin

[HELP] 2019 Crashing at outline creation
Posted by: conradccb - 04-30-2019, 12:42 AM - Replies (2)

Hi all,
My Kubla 2019 keeps crashing when trying to apply creation of a Manual (but auto calculated) outline of Design Contours.
The design contour has ~4000
It has an Existing surface uploaded via DXF.
This is the point before it closes. Once I click OK, the program just disappears.
Note it also crashes if I manually draw a smaller area (jsut around the lower basin).
Any ideas?

  XY Offset Suggestion
Posted by: TimO - 04-23-2019, 01:45 PM - Replies (3)

Good afternoon All,
I'm currently working on a road project and the drawings only show a finished plan view, but I need to prepare a cut and fill calculation to include a 1.1m offset outward of the finished surface edge.
For example the road is 7.3m wide but the width of dig would be 9.5m.
Is this possible with the current version, and if not could I possibly add it to the list of possible future inclusions.
Kind Regards
Tim

  Kubla Cubed 2019 Released!
Posted by: Ted Woods - 03-20-2019, 08:47 AM - Replies (2)

It's finally here! The long awaited Kubla Cubed 2019 has been launched with a host of new features and improvements.

The biggest visual change in the new version is the addition of a new "Measure" panel which will provide a selection of measuring tools (Counts, Lengths, Areas) which have been frequently requested by our QS users.  Other enhancements include:

  • Volume Regions (report the cut\fill in different regions of the site on a single phase)

  • The site plans in the main window so you can align site plans with reference to each other.

  • The feature surface take-off in the main window so you can align things together.

  • Support for 'floating points', in the explicit outline and break-line definitions.  Fill in the points you know and the program will calculate the others automatically.

  • Edit Menu -> Copy\Paste.

  • Edit Menu -> Point Snapping that allows snapping to boundary lines and grid lines.

  • Import\Export support for the DWG file format, also direct copy\paste of elements into the take-off window from CAD.

  • An 'Off' option for earthwork element side batter allowing totally vertical side slopes (No more entering 1:0.01 to get an approximation).

  • Phase drag & drop functionality.

  • Cursor reporting of cut\fill\existing\proposed level in the 3D view.
If you are a Kubla Cubed Lite user you can download the new lite edition here.  For Professional users with a subscription the program will prompt you to upgrade the next time you launch the program.  Perpetual users can contact us directly to get an upgrade quote.

  Calculation Data Has Disappeared
Posted by: conradccb - 03-18-2019, 06:01 AM - Replies (3)

I purchased kubla cubed pro last week to measure a job I am currently working on.

It was going well, and I had calculated a lot of cut/fill data (see prev saved shots below).

I went back in to the file today and the cut/fill data has gone. The shapes all still show in the list, but the calculations and re-levelling has all disappeared (see below). It is only showing Existing conditions.

What has happened and how do I get it back? One day away from a deadline so would love to get a solution!
