  Kubla Cubed 2018

Can Kubla reveal if there will be an updated Kubla Cubed 2018 coming soon and if so, what might the new features be?

  Slope Angle Visualisation (Shading Map)
Posted by: Ted Woods - 03-22-2018, 01:49 PM - Replies (2)

Someone looking at Kubla Cubed recently said that it would be useful to have a feature in the program whereby you could shade the surface according to the incline of the surface.

I thought this was quite an interesting idea and wouldn't be too difficult to do.  The Cut\Fill map is shaded based on comparison of two surface so having another shading scheme using the incline on each triangle of the proposed should be to difficult either.

He said it was critical on some of his projects that no inclines were more than 1:15 on the site.

Has anyone else got any input on this ? Is it something that would fine widespread interest.

Something like this I am guessing is what it would look like : https://www.stratiformllc.com/blog/moder...lope-angle

Working with Point Cloud Files (.xyz, .csv, .xls)
Posted by: Ted Woods - 03-22-2018, 01:39 PM - Replies (1)

I often get asked how to work with point files by new users as in Kubla Cubed it isn't obvious straight away.  Basically there is no "Point Cloud" object instead you have to import your points into a "Feature Surface" which is made up of points, contours, breaks and a boundary.  You will also have to create a boundary around the points for the program to triangulate, you can either do this buy hand or use the automatic outline tool.

I have made a video about this as point clouds are one of the easiest data types to work with, they are fast and also accurate (as long as you have a high density and an even distribution of points).

  LIDAR Accuracy ?
Posted by: TimO - 03-17-2018, 04:31 PM - Replies (1)

Good afternoon All,

Firstly, I can't believe I'm posting on the survey part of this forum, but since starting to use Kubla Cubed I've become fascinated with obtaining survey points and contours for all my cut and fill projects.
My question is, to all you land surveyor types is, how accurate do you find LIDAR data?
I've managed to find a way of converting the LIDAR data into xyz points then producing a dxf of the contours, chopping the resulting file to the required area of the site, then importing into Kubla Cubed.
It would be quite comforting to know if the data is reasonably accurate and suitable for estimating applications.

Cheers

  Program Calculation
Posted by: Bernard - 03-05-2018, 11:32 PM - Replies (2)

Hi Ted,

I am recently taking off earthwork/pavement/rock pitching qty for a road project of 1.9km length and using Kubla Cubed to form up the model from pdf drawings provided. I used a total of 23 construction stages to simulate the construction process and the model file is about 9.8MB in size. Whenever I call up the Kubla program to start the project file it would take about 30 minutes or so to load the project. Is it possible for the program to have a faster loading time instead of re-calculating every construction stages up to the last stage during start up. Can the program jump straight into last construction stage (Stage#23) whenever I start up the program by bypassing all recalculation from existing stage onwards ? This will definitely speed up the project file loading time.

Please advise.

Thanks and regards,
Bernard

Option to define cut/fill/height in feature surface.
Posted by: Collins - 02-08-2018, 11:43 PM - Replies (1)

Good day,

As a rough grading contractor, there are instances where we are provided with original ground elevations (contours or points) and proposed ground (contours or points) with proposed cut/fill as opposed to elevation.

I have not been able to determine an easy way to use Kubla to quantify earthworks in such an instance. It would be very helpful if Kubla allowed the option to define contours and points with a height parameter (proposed cut/fill).

Additionally, being able to have the cursor display existing elevation while working in the feature edit window would be immensely helpful.

Thank you!

  Feature Requests
Posted by: TimO - 01-17-2018, 10:29 AM - Replies (5)

Good morning and Happy New Year,

I'm currently working on a road widening project and thought of a couple of features that would be handy

Firstly a back fill feature, for example, in my current project the road is widened up to new concrete retaining walls and the ability to quantify the void fill behind the retaining walls from sub-formation to formation level would be a great time saver.

Secondly, the ability to view the completed works in 3D. At present we can only view each element individually.

Only some thought I had which might find there way into future updates.

Cheers

  Touch Screen
Posted by: JGCG - 12-31-2017, 01:23 AM - Replies (1)

Been using Kubla for a few days now and it's working great. I have some bigger projects to do takeoffs on and need some way to speed up the process. Right now, I'm just using my laptop mouse to trace out the topography maps. Question I have is, will a touch screen work with this software. I'd like to be able to use a touch screen to trace everything out, plus plug the computer up to the T.V. for a bigger view.

Thanks,
Justin

  Varying Batter angles
Posted by: GTipp - 12-20-2017, 09:33 AM - Replies (2)

Hi All.
I work as a geotech consultant and we have a number of projects where we need to model and calculate for different batter slopes within different materials i.e. rock at 0.25H:1V, but overlying soils at 1H:1V or 2H:1V.

Another scenario is having different batters on the different sides of a cut, i.e. cut into rock which has bedding on an incline the cut batter with the bedded coming out of the rock is at 1H:1V but where it is into the rock can have 0.25H:1V and 0.5H:1V along the other sides.

It would be useful to be able to click on a cut face and specify the batter for that face.

Feature Surface - Using Ground Levels Option
Posted by: randallinho - 12-08-2017, 10:38 AM - Replies (1)

Just wanted to run something by you if that’s OK
I have a site that has a large area where we have to strip off 80mm but then add 150mm of new topsoil.
The finished levels are to match the existing levels (before strip).

The approach I have taken:
1.                  Strip 80mm
2.                  Create Feature Surface – selecting Use Ground Levels option
3.                  Apply an offset of -0.15m

My question is, is my offset correct or should I have applied an offset of -0.07m (0.15m – 0.08m strip). I’m unsure whether the software works to original ground levels or ground levels after strip when using the use ground levels feature?

Thanks
